The future of Typography on the web.
I stumbled on a great article this morning titled, Typography on the web. It contains a small bit of the history of web typography, and discusses what will happen to web typography in the future. Which obviously is leaning towards more typefaces available for all browsers.
With so many parties needed to be involved to achieve such a thing I think it will take a long time to see this plan come into fruition. Which, for me personally, I’m happy about!
The web, even with it’s great advancements, still is saturated with horrible-looking sites. People tend to overcomplicate there websites making them hard to enjoy. Allowing people free reign of an abundance of typefaces will just cause an insurgence of unbearable-looking sites. So for now I’m happy with the restrictions.
With that all said there is a small movement of people who back the cause of more typefaces on the web, BUT importantly, only beautiful ones. People like The League of Moveable Type who I back fully! People who hand pick great-looking open-source typefaces, and encourage the widespread online use of them. I completely agree with there ethos, and hope this sort of thing does catch on.
